International Workshop of Numismatics – Proceedings (WIN – Atti)

Series directed by Giacomo Pardini

ISSN 2704-7164

International Workshop of Numismatics – Proceedings is a series of the journal ‘Dialoghi di numismatica. Protagonisti, prospettive, ricerche’, owned by the University of Salerno. The series aims to publish coins in context studies discussed among the International Workshop of Numismatics conferences. The purpose of these conferences is to connect scholars from a different background who have been dealing with coin finds and archaeological contexts during their research. The International Workshop of Numismatics – Proceedings is a place to discuss the methodology of study and interpretation of coin finds and their contexts, trying to give a new impetus to the debate between numismatics, archaeologists and historians.

International Workshop of Numismatics – Proceedings adopts the double-blind peer review process, to ensure a high quality of the published contents. The papers are judged by two referees who are not part of the scientific committee.

Numismatica e Archeologia. Monete stratigrafie e contesti. Dati a confronto-Workshop Internazionale di Numismatica, ed. by G. Pardini, N. Parise, F. Marani contains the proceedings of the first International Workshop of Numismatics (WIN), held in Rome between the 28 and 30 September 2011, supported by the Fondazione Roma and organised by the Department of Antiquity Studies of the Sapienza. University of Rome, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Heritage Studies/DISPAC of the University of Salerno, the Department of Ancient World Studies of the University of Tuscia, the Italian Institute of Numismatic, the Department of Coins and Medals and the Department of Prehistory & Europe of the British Museum.

The purpose of the conference was to connect scholars from a different background (numismatics, archaeologists and historians) about the methodology of study and interpretation of coin finds into their archaeological contexts.

The papers published here (more than 40 papers) discuss the results of research in which the study of coins is conducted also considering the archaeological layer and associated artefacts. The perspective is extended to the whole Mediterranean basin, from antiquity to the medieval and modern world. The path, dealing with coin finds in different sites with different functions and occupations, proceeds from Rome and Italy to the West and the East.

This volume is a further important contribution that aims to spread the numismatic data coming from archaeological excavations and to stimulate studies and methodological reflections, considering the current debate on coin finds from archaeological excavations carried out in multi-layered sites and the 'different methods' developed for study them. Thanks to the data that can be deduced from coin find, it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the historical, cultural and economic context that produced the coins, used it and finally lost or discarded it.
